Jim Limburg was born and grew up in Redwood Falls, Minnesota. He spent a good deal of time in his early years fishing, beginning with a cane pole in pursuit of bullheads in the state park near his home. He has continued fishing with a variety of techniques, including bait casting, spinning, fly fishing, trolling, jigging - each of which has provided him with only limited success. He has always been better at telling fishing tales (even writing a book about Jonah and the whale) than actually catching fish. Since finishing Luther College, Luther Seminary and Union Seminary in Virginia (where he also fished for smallmouth bass in the James River), he has earned his living by teaching, beginning with junior and senior high school music and mathematics. He was Professor of Religion at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, for 16 years and Professor of Old Testament at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota, for 23 years. He has been a Visiting Professor at United Theological Seminary, Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary, Berkeley, California, and is currently teaching as Professor Emeritus of Old Testament at Luther Seminary. Working at a desk with an inspiring view of Woman Lake, he has written a number of books and articles on theological themes, including Psalms for Sojourners (Fortress Press), Psalms and Jonah (Westminster John Knox Press) and Encountering Ecclesiastes (Eerdmans Publishing House). Special interests in addition to fishing include watching eagles, sailing, trombone playing (he is a member of the Woman Lake Brass) and with his wife Martha, acquainting their five grandchildren with the ways of Woman Lake. Limburg is a member of the Child, Girl and Woman Lake Association Leadership Team. | ||||||||||||||
